Benefits of Having Landmark Status
Owners of properties landmarked by the City of Lafayette become eligible to apply for tax credits and/or Colorado Historic Preservation Fund grant money, may realize an increase in the value of your home and neighborhood, and can obtain official recognition that your building has special significance and is an important part of Lafayette’s history. The best benefit of district designation, however, is that it protects the historic character of your property and your neighborhood.
Impact of Being a Historic Landmark
- Listing a Property
- Does not apply to building interiors
- Does not obligate you to undertake rehabilitation or restoration
- Does not require an owner to make any changes to the site
- Does not restrict the uses normally allowed on the property
- Property Owner’s Commitment
- A listing on the Register of Historic Places cannot be revoked
- Any plans for work on the exterior of a listed property must be approved by the Lafayette Historic Preservation Board
- Minimum maintenance may be required if the property is willfully neglected

- Structures should have sufficient original or accurately restored material to maintain the historic character
- The property is historically significant through its architectural design, its association with a historic event or person, its physical impact and location within Lafayette, or its potential to provide important information on the history of Lafayette
- The property should be at least 50 years old
