Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee Meeting
January 4, 2012

Call to Order/Roll Call
Co-Chair Lauren Jones called the January 4 meeting to order at 6:35 pm in the Nyland Room at the Lafayette Recreation Center, 111 W. Baseline Road, Lafayette, Colorado.  The following Committee Members were present: Wyatt Clarke, Madison Cowan, Zach Cusworth, Jacob Ettinger, Faun Gulland, Paige Jones, Jasjit Mangat, JD Mangat, Emma Piller, Abby Schmid, Megan Schmid, Sammy Secrist, Balkarn Shani, Hailey Smith, Alex Solheim, Jasmine Trujillo, Greg Zimmers, and Paul Zimmers. Also present were Councilor Christine Berg and Advisory Members Karen Snortland and Elaina Verveer.
 
Committee Minutes
A motion was made by Emma Piller and seconded by Hailey Smith to approve the minutes of the Committee Meeting of December 7, 2011 as written.  The motion was passed unanimously. 
 
Scheduled Items 
Director of Recreation and Facility Management Curt Cheesman reviewed board policies, including sunshine laws, which the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee must practice as a newly elected municipal board.
 
Advisory Member Karen Snortland provided an overview of Lafayette’s Oatmeal Festival and 5K race, which will take place on January 14.  Members of the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee have been invited to both help prepare for the event on Friday, January 13 and staff the 5K on January 15.
 
Co-Chair Hailey Smith shared that the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee has been invited to participate in the City of Longmont’s Martin Luther King, Jr. event on Sunday, January 15 between 3:00-5:00 p.m.  Hailey also reviewed the final program for Lafayette’s Seventh Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March for Peace and Celebration, which will be held on Monday, January 16, 2012.  The event will commence with a March for Peace at 12:00 p.m. at the corner of W. Waneka Parkway and Public Road.  Immediately following, community members will reconvene at Pioneer Elementary, where a celebration and service fair will be underway.  Speakers include Congressman Jared Polis, Second Baptist Church Pastor Bruce Merriweather, University of Colorado and Naropa University students, the Shekenah Glory Choir of the Second Baptist Church, and the Shamwari Youth Marimba.  The event will also include a light lunch and raffle.  Members also created signage for the March for Peace, identified relevant volunteer opportunities, and reviewed a list of businesses to approach for in-kind donations.   
 
Adjournment
A motion was made by Madison Cowan and seconded by Faun Gulland to adjourn the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee meeting at 7:40 p.m. The motion was passed unanimously.
