Committee Minutes
Minutes from the Committee Meeting of January 4, 2012 will be reviewed on February 1, 2012.

Former Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee Member and PeaceJam Foundation Intern Maddie McCormack met with the Committee to discuss several upcoming PeaceJam events. Members were specifically invited to participate in a ten-day PeaceJam and Global Explorers Expedition to Costa Rica in July to explore how peace and justice relate to environmental preservation. Applications are due February 15; interested members would be responsible for covering airfare and the program fee. Maddie also invited the Committee to join PeaceJam’s Global Call to Action, and post its efforts to address social problems on the organization’s web site.
Members of the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee discussed their role in organizing Lafayette’s Seventh Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March for Peace and Celebration, which was held on Monday, January 16. In addition to identifying highlights from the event, which convened more than 400 community members, the Committee identified ways to improve the event in the future. Suggestions included holding the afternoon celebration at the Lafayette Recreation Center or a larger venue; coordinating additional service projects; inviting more diverse performers to participate in both the march and afternoon celebration; incorporating storytelling; and identifying additional roles for youth and/or student groups from local schools, including Louisville Middle and Monarch High School.
Members also prepared thank you cards and donation receipts for individuals and businesses which supported the Martin Luther King, Jr. event.
Co-Chair Hailey Smith briefly reviewed items that will require the Committee’s attention this spring, including a proposal by Centaurus students to amend the youth curfew policy. The Committee will identify other initiatives and projects to support during the February 1 Committee Meeting.
