Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chair Swennes.
Items from the Public
Dick Schillawski reported that the Historical Society is hosting the “In search of someone’s daughter” program at the library this Thursday. He also reported that the Historical Society is in the midst of a generational transition and requested people help volunteer at the Museums on Saturdays.
Minutes of the November 8, 2011 Meeting
Seeing no corrections Chair Swennes declared the November 8, 2011 minutes approved.
Election of Officers
A nomination was unanimously approved for Board member Schwendler to serve as Chair. A nomination was unanimously approved for Board member Brouillette to serve as Vice Chair.
Public Road Survey/Downtown Visioning Workshop Follow Up
Descriptions of Adaptive Reuse of 12 Eligible Properties on Public Road.
The Board summarized the following building descriptions:
705 S. Public Road Fly Fishing Shop – National Register Eligible
Rehabilitation
The Board described the following character defining features:
• Size
• Shape
• Roof line
• Exterior materials (siding),
• Windows
• Doors
The Board acknowledged they were comfortable with shifting the building to the north or south end of the block to accommodate redevelopment on either side of this building.
100 West Cleveland Street Professional Building – State Register Eligible
Rehabilitation:
The Board described retaining the following Character Defining Features:
• Form
• Scale
• Exterior material
• Window and door locations
Acceptable Modifications
• Possible alteration of a window into a door on the east elevation
• Restore the porch posts with possible spindle posts
101 – 103 S. Public Road Sportsman/Highway Drug/ Rosie’s Pool Hall – Local Register Eligible
Preservation or Restoration
The Board noted that all three units were consistent with the metal façade and rough stone. The Board described preserving the 1960’s style or restoring the building back to the 1940’s style. There was a discussion on how the 1940’s style is not as common as the 1960’s modernization of the building.

Rehabilitation
The Board discussed how intact the building was and noted that minimal changes should occur to the exterior of the building. The Board remarked how the interior courtyard could be used for an artist show display. Interior changes were flexible.
The Board agreed to continue providing building descriptions at their next meeting.
Landmark Letter to Public Road Property Owners
The Board agreed to the content of the letter. Staff member Westover stated she would get the letter into a final form for the Chair’s signature and then mail the letters.
HPB Official Role in the Alliance
Council member Berg provided an update that City Council will be holding a goals setting session in February. Discussions on changing the make up of the Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority (LURA) Board are underway.
Myths
Board member Brouillette offered to draft a letter to the City Council thanking them for their time at the joint meeting and clarifying some terms such as landmarked properties and eligible properties.
List of How Preservation Fits the Visioning Plan.
The Board discussed the Downtown Vision Plan and how preservation fits into the vision.
Comprehensive Plan Update Discussion
Staff reported that Comprehensive Plan updating process would also include new goals that could either be things that the Board is already doing or a wish list of things the Board would like to see. With this in mind staff suggested the Board review the Goals and Policies and note any new goals the Board would recommend be included in the Comprehensive Plan.
2012 Goals
The Board discussed encouraging business to paint murals on their buildings, compiling a history on mining, and interpretive signs on the trails near the coal mines. It was agreed to continue the discussion on 2012 goals at the next meeting.
Get Together
The Board agreed to get together for a pot luck on Sunday February12th.
Old Business/ New Business
Staff member Westover announced that the results of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Grant for the cemetery headstone project would be presented at the January 17th City Council meeting. The Board may also want to host a ceremony in the spring or summer. Board member Schwendler reported that the National Trust also has a façade grant program and she would look into obtaining more information.
Adjournment
Seeing no other important matters that were overlooked Chair Swennes called for a motion to adjourn. Board member Schwendler moved to adjourn, seconded by Board member Nimmer, the motion passed unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.
