Scheduled Items
Several representatives from Centaurus High School’s Public Achievement (PA) program met with the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee to seek support for proposed spring PA projects.

Representing a PA group focusing on global warming, Centaurus sophomores Sarhira Salgado and Melanie Torres discussed their proposal to coordinate a campaign to ban plastic bags in Lafayette.  In addition to advising them to research actions taken by other municipalities, Committee Members suggested that they contact local business owners and others who would be directly impacted by a plastic bag ban.  The Committee agreed to research the issue as well as help distribute surveys and petitions.  Students and Committee Members will reconvene at the end of the school year to identify subsequent actions.

Centaurus freshmen Fernando Cerceda, Xing He, Christian Pinon, Richard Schaub, and Aaron Wilkins-Crowder and University of Colorado students Marvin Coughenour and Ace Eckstein discussed plans to  host a conversation with the Lafayette Police Department as a means to both discuss the juvenile loitering policy and build community between the police and local teens.  The Committee agreed to both help distribute student surveys and coordinate the proposed discussion with the police.

Centaurus seniors Chris Callahan, Angela Corder, and Toni Perez discussed plans to coordinate a march and rally to raise awareness about domestic violence on Saturday, April 21 from 1:30 -2:30 p.m. in conjunction with Global Youth Service Day.  The Committee agreed to co-sponsor the event and oversee logistics for the march.

Co-Chair Lauren Jones and Committee Members Jessica Lawson and Jasjit Mangat shared outcomes from their presentation to the City Council on March 5, when they both reviewed the  budget and highlights from Lafayette’s seventh annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March for Peace and Celebration, and discussed preliminary plans for Lafayette’s eighth annual “Seeds of Justice” March and Rally, which the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee will continue to coordinate.

Planned in conjunction with Lafayette’s 2012 Cesar Chavez Celebration, the “Seeds of Justice” March and Rally will take place on Friday, April 6.  Prior to the march, the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee will co-host a community birthday celebration honoring Cesar Chavez at Pioneer Elementary School.  Geared toward elementary school students, the birthday celebration will feature several art and educational activities.  The rally, which will be held at LaMont Does Park will be followed by a community soccer game.  To prepare for the event, Committee Members formed sub-committees and reviewed the event budget.

A motion was made by Sammy Secrist and seconded by Emma Piller to allocate $772 in Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee funding to cover expenses associated with annual Cesar Chavez activities.  The motion was passed unanimously.
