Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee Meeting
April 4, 2012

Call to Order/Roll Call
Co-Chair Hailey Smith called the April 4 meeting to order at 6:38 pm in the Multipurpose Room at the Lafayette Recreation Center, 111 W. Baseline Road, Lafayette, Colorado. The following Committee Members were present: Madison Cowan, Zack Cusworth, Jacob Ettinger, Faun Gulland, Jessica Lawson, Jasjit Mangat, JD Mangat, Emma Piller, Balkarn Shahi, Alex Solheim, and Gabi Weldon. Also present were Councilor Christine Berg, Recreation Specialist Kathy Apjoke, and Advisory Member Elaina Verveer.
Committee Minutes
A motion was made by Jessica Lawson and seconded by Zack Cusworth to approve the minutes of the Committee Meeting of March 21, 2012 as written. The motion was passed unanimously.
Scheduled Items
Advisory Member Elaina Verveer reviewed logistics for Project YES’ Open House, which will take place on Thursday, April 12 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the organization’s new youth center at 805 Excalibur. Members have specifically been invited to facilitate a mural project with community members.
Co-Chair Hailey Smith shared that the Committee has been invited to host an informal gathering with Anthony Chavez, Cesar Chavez’s grandson, on Monday, April 30 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Lafayette Skate Park. Chavez will be in town to participate in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Lafayette Cesar Chavez Celebration, which will be held on Tuesday, May 1 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the VFW.
Co-Chair Hailey Smith reviewed logistics for Project YES’ 10th Annual SeLebration, which will be held on Saturday, April 21. In addition to supporting the organization with volunteer recruitment and providing onsite assistance, the Committee plans to launch a campaign to address youth homelessness during the event. (Members will facilitate a brief reflection during the luncheon program, as well as invite community members to complete a survey to capture the community’s perception of the issue.)
The Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee will also co-sponsor an Anti-Domestic Violence March and Rally with Public Achievement students at Centaurus High School immediately following SeLebration on April 21. The march will commence at 1:30 p.m. at Pioneer Elementary and end at Festival Plaza, where a brief rally, featuring student remarks and a balloon release resolution, will be held.
The Committee reviewed volunteer assignments, identified additional outreach strategies, and prepared event signage in preparation of Lafayette’s 8th Annual Cesar Chavez Community Birthday Celebration and Seeds of Justice March and Rally, which will be held on April 6.
Adjournment
A motion was made by Jasjit Mangat and seconded by Madison Cowan to adjourn the Committee Meeting of April 4 at 7:29 p.m. The motion was passed unanimously.
