Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee Meeting
April 18, 2012

Call to Order/Roll Call
Advisory Member Elaina Verveer called the April 18 meeting to order at 6:40 pm in the Multipurpose Room at the Lafayette Recreation Center, 111 W. Baseline Road, Lafayette, Colorado. The following Committee Members were present: Madison Cowan, Zack Cusworth, Jacob Ettinger, Emily Gardner, Faun Gulland, Jessica Lawson, Jasjit Mangat, JD Mangat, Emma Piller, Balkarn Shahi, Alex Solheim, and Gabi Weldon. Also present were Councilor Christine Berg and Intern Arielle Powers.
Committee Minutes
A motion was made by Emma Piller and seconded by Faun Gulland to approve the minutes of the Committee Meeting of April 4, 2012 as written. The motion was passed unanimously.
Scheduled Items
Latino Advisory Board Member Tina Montoya and Staff Liaison Mary Lester met with the Committee to discuss Anthony Chavez’s upcoming visit to Lafayette. Chavez, the grandson of Cesar Chavez, has been invited to participate in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Lafayette Cesar Chavez Celebration, which will be held on Tuesday, May 1 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the VFW. In addition, Chavez will meet with local youth during an informal event on Monday, April 30 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Lafayette Skate Park. The Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee will co-host the latter event, as well as support organizers’ outreach efforts.
Advisory Member Elaina Verveer invited the Committee to participate in a conversation with the Lafayette Police that Centaurus students are coordinating on Tuesday, May 1 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to identify opportunities to build relationships between the police and local teens. JD Mangat and Balkarn Shahi will represent the Committee.
Committee Member Jasjit Mangat invited the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee to co-host a movie screening with Eats and Sweets on July 14 at Festival Plaza.
Elaina Verveer reviewed logistics for Project YES’ 10th Annual SeLebration, which will be held on Saturday, April 21. In addition to completing structured service projects in the morning, the Committee will launch a campaign to address youth homelessness during the luncheon program. Immediately following SeLebration, the Lafayette Youth Advisory Committee will join Centaurus High School students, who are coordinating an anti-domestic violence rally at Festival Plaza. Committee Member Jessica Lawson will make brief remarks; a balloon resolution release will follow.
In preparation of Saturday’s events, the Committee prepared remarks, developed a survey on the topic of youth homelessness, and created signage for the anti-domestic violence march and rally.
Adjournment
A motion was made by Emma Piller and seconded by Madison Cowan to adjourn the Committee Meeting of April 18 at 7:39 p.m. The motion was passed unanimously.
