Frequently Asked Questions - Public Works Snow and Ice Control
Q: What ice-melting materials does the City use?A: Lafayette uses Ice Slicer, which is a hard mined salt product with clay attached. This is a change from our previous sand and salt mixture. This product has several advantages:
- We will be using less salt on the road.
- This product does not leave a dangerous sandy residue on the streets.
- Street sweeping costs will be lowered.
- Air quality will be improved through the reduction of airborn particulates.
Top Q: Why did the snowplow bury my sidewalk?A: We try very hard to plow in such a way that driveways are not blocked, but this is not always possible. The most efficient method to plow snow is to push it to the side of the road. Plowing snow to the center of the roadway would leave your driveway open, but would not provide enough room for fire trucks and other emergency vehicles to operate.
Top Q: How many snowplows does the City have?A: The City uses four dump trucks to plow. A fifth truck is used to assist the other four trucks when snow and ice conditions make this necessary. The City uses these trucks to perform snow and ice control services on approximately 75 lane miles of streets. Other streets may be served when significant snow accumulations make it necessary.
Top Q: During a snow storm, which streets does the City maintain?A: The Streets and Utilities Division maintains approximately 156 lane miles of improved, dedicated roadways within the City of Lafayette. Of this amount, the Streets and Utilities Division performs regular snow and ice control services on approximately 75 lane miles of streets, though other streets may be served in cases of significant snow accumulations.
Parks, Open Space & Golf maints City properties, including City Hall, the Recreation Center and all parks.
Colorado Department of Transportation maintains Hwy 287, Hwy 7, and Hwy 42.
