Q: Who should I contact if I have a question on city ordinance violations relating to:
weeds, trees and shrubs, blight, vehicles of any kind, parking and parking complaints, snow removal, open space/city park rules?

 Top Q: How can I get speeders in my neighborhood to slow down?A: Contact an available Patrol Officer by calling (303) 441-4444. The department has a radar activated "Speed Trailer" which can be set up in problem areas of your neighborhood. This device measures vehicle speeds and displays it to the driver along with the posted speed limit for that area. Studies have shown that it is effective in reducing the amount of speed violaters. Extra patrols can also be scheduled in which available officers will be present to monitor speeds personally and address them with either tickets or warnings as needed. Together, they should effectivley reduce the problem.
 Top Q: How do I report a "road rage" incident or reckless driver?A: If the offending vehicle is following you, or if you can safely follow it and you have a cell phone, call Dispatch at (303) 441-4444. The Operator will give you directions and request that you stay on the line if possible. If you would like to file a complaint after an incident, call Dispatch and a Patrol Officer will contact you back for follow-up. You may also come into the Police Department to make a report in person during normal business hours.
Important information for a report will include:
Time, Date & Location of the incident
License plate of the offending vehicle
Description of the vehicle including any significant damage
Description of the offending driver to include an estimated age, race, recognizable facial features such as hair color/length, facial hair, prescription eyeglasses, etc.
Other possible witnesses to the incident.
You may need to testify against the offending driver if the issue goes to court, so it is very important that you can positively identify the driver of the vehicle.

 Top Q: Is there a curfew in Lafayette and what are the age limits?A: It is unlawful for any person under 18 years of age to be out in public anywhere in the city:
10:00 pm - 5:00 am on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday
12:00 am, (midnight), - 5:00 am on Friday & Saturday
The curfew is in effect 365 days a year, holidays INCLUDED.
Exceptions:
If the minor is with his/her legal guardian, or such minor is in performance of duty as directed by thier legal guardian, or such minor is lawfully employed, making it necessary to be in such place during the specified time period above.
 Top Q: Can I get legal advice from the Police Department?A: No, by law we are prohibited from giving legal advice.
 Top Q: Are motorized "Go-peds" or "Pocket Bikes" legal in the city?A: No, they are illegal to operate on any city property, to include streets, sidewalks, parks, open-space areas, etc. They are however legal to operate on private property with the owner's permission.
 Top Q: I purchased a pellet/bb gun in town, does that make it legal to use in the city?A: Although it is legal to purchase such items in the city of Lafayette, it is illegal to fire one ANYWHERE in the city, including private property.
 Top Q: Do I need to register my bicycle with the city?A: Bicycle registration is not mandatory, but is encouraged, as it helps us to return your bicycle sooner, should it ever be stolen and recovered. It does not cost anything to register and can be arranged by contacting a Community Service Officer at (303) 665-5571, or by walk-in at the Lafayette Police Department during normal business hours.
 Top Q: What should I do if I am involved in an auto accident?A: Remain calm. Call 911 and report any injuries, location, vehicles involved and a call back number if you are using a mobile phone. If there are no injuries, the vehicles are movable and the accident is blocking traffic, it is ok to move the vehicles off to the side of the road, the nearest side street, parking lot, etc. If this is the case, make sure dispatch is informed. Otherwise, leave the vehicles where they are. It is also safer to stay out of a vehicle that is blocking traffic as long as weather or injuries permit.
