Commercial Signage & Display Information
The City recognizes that signs are a necessary means of visual communication for businesses to identify themselves. The Municipal Code intends to provide a reasonable balance between the right of an individual business and the right of the public to be protected against the visual discord that results from the unrestricted proliferation of signs. Please see Section 26-21 of the Municipal Code for the complete sign regulations.
Points to remember:
1. All permanent and temporary signage requires a sign permit application.
2. You can fax, mail or deliver your permit application to the Community Development Department located on the second floor of the Lafayette City Hall building at 1290 S. Public Rd.
General Rule
A business can display temporary signage for sixty (60) days during the first half of each calendar year and sixty (60) days during the second half of each calendar year. Any business may display one (1) or more temporary signs on the lot or tract of land on which the business is located provided that the total temporary signage may not exceed thirty (30) square feet in the aggregate. Such temporary signs may be window signs, wall signs, not more than one (1) freestanding sign, or any combination thereof. An approved application is required before the placement of any signage. Sign Permit Application.

$10 fee for a temporary sign permit.
$50 fee for an Outdoor Sales, Storage or Display permit.
Temporary Sidewalk Sales and Outside Display of Merchandise
A building may engage in the temporary outdoor sale, storage or display of general merchandise on the lot or tract occupied by such building provided the occupant complies with the conditions listed in Section 26.14-15.1 of the Code. In each calendar year, the aggregate total number of days for which a temporary outdoor sales, storage or display permit is granted shall not exceed one hundred twenty (120) days per lot or tract. An approved application is required before the placement of outdoor sales, storage or display. Outside Sales, Storage, or Display Application.
Window Signs
A maximum of 25% of the windows may be covered on each wall with unlighted signs without a permit. If you wish to cover more window space, a sign permit application must be submitted.
Grand Openings
Any bona-fide grand opening is allowed 30 days of temporary signage and/or wind sign displays. These 30 days are not applied towards the 120 annual days allotted to other temporary business activities. However, a permit is required prior to the display of a grand opening sign and/or wind sign. These signs are to be displayed for a period of no more than 30 days, with the grand opening banner not to exceed 30 square feet. Wind signs such as balloons, pennants, flags, or any sign that blows in the wind or spins are permitted only in connection with bona-fide grand opening for permitted uses in business or industrial districts.
Signs Held by People
The Code allows people to hold signs and walk along the public sidewalk as long as they are not disrupting traffic or obstructing pedestrians. These signs are not to be set on or affixed to the ground at any time.
Sign Face Change
A permit is required when you change the material in the face of a sign. This does not apply to reader board signs or repainting.
Wind Signs
Wind signs, defined as signage consisting of one (1) or more banners, flags, pennants, ribbons, spinners, streamers, captive balloons, or other objects or material; fastened in such manner as to move upon being subjected to pressure by wind, are only permitted in connection with a bona fide grade opening. Signs may only be displayed for a period of thirty (30) days, and no time extensions may be granted.
