Citizens of Lafayette vote for new police building

A covert Ford F-150 was purchased for traffic enforcement.

A preliminary survey for a new police department building is conducted

A 2004 Chevy Tahoe is purchased by the department for use as a supervisor vehicle

2003

Automated External Defibrillators, (AED) are deployed in the field

Police Motorcycles re-introduced (Officers John Sellers and James Johnson assigned – 2 Harley Davidson Electra-Glides)

Rank of Lieutenant replaced with Commander (Lieutenants Mark Battersby and Rick Bashor)

2nd tactical position assigned to BCSO SWAT team

Emergency lights and siren added to unmarked Detective and Command vehicles

Thermal Imaging equipment is obtained and used by the department

Worst child abuse case in Boulder County history investigated: Joseph Dowler was later convicted of murdering his infant son

CART team (Critical Accident Reconstruction Team) formed to investigate major traffic accidents / fatalities

Sergeant Rick Bashor became the department’s 1st Detective Sergeant

Detective Bureau formed a Family Crimes Unit with 2 Detectives specializing in domestic violence and child abuse

Detective Scott Emerson became the 1st Lafayette officer assigned to the Boulder County Drug task Force

Officer Gardner Mendenhall became the 1st Lafayette Officer assigned to the BCSO SWAT Team

1996

Navy blue and silver contemporary shoulder patch replaced flag design on uniform after urging from officers

1992

D.A.R.E. program initiated in elementary schools with Officer Wendy Firth

2 separate domestic violence shootings cause critical injuries in one week in January

Bicycle patrol was initiated with Crime Prevention Officer Chuck Andrews and the Explorers Post

Officer Bill Palmer became the department’s 1st DRE (Drug Recognition Expert)

Several officers were injured in a riot at 11990 E South Boulder Rd that required assistance from other metro agencies

Distinctive navy blue and silver paint job adopted for patrol vehicles

The Police Department moved from 201 W. Simpson St. to the new City Hall Building, 1290 S. Public Rd.

Unique American Flag shoulder patch is introduced for patrol uniforms

Officer Betty Friese became the 1st full-time Evidence Technician

Sergeant John DeVico became the department’s 1st Lieutenant

Larry Stallcup became Chief of Police

1975

Traditional Guardian style badge is retired and unique American Flag badge is introduced

Phil Battany of the BCSO served as Interim Chief of Police

Daniel Wheeler became Chief of Police

1971

Jim Burns became Chief of Police

1968

Roy Chambers became Chief of Police

Vernon Story became Chief of Police

Floyd Whipple became Chief of Police

1950’s

Lenny Metz, Barney McWilliams, Ken Kissinger, Robert Lawley, and Mike Anderson served as Town Marshalls

1940’s

Bill Gallagher and Tony Guanella served as Town Marshalls

1932

Harry Flint became Town Marshall and 1st motorcycle officer (once wrote 71 traffic citations on one day in June, 1932)
