Restorative Justice:
The purpose of the Restorative Justice Program is to provide an alternative to the criminal justice system in response to certain crimes involving juveniles and young adults (first-time offenders). The intended outcome is for the responsible party to repair the harm to the victim, community and themselves. This process uses community group conferencing or peace circles led by volunteer facilitators.
Facilitators attend a 2-day facilitation training and then work as a co-facilitator with an experienced facilitator who will act as a mentor during the pre-conferencing and conferencing process. Co-facilitators are responsible for taking notes during the conference and summarizing, to the large group, the feelings and emotions expressed by the participants. You will also write up the agreement, and bring the food (reimbursable) for the “breaking of bread” that takes place at the end of the conference.
After training, volunteers are expected to facilitate or co-facilitate one conference a month. As a facilitator, you are responsible for pre-conferencing your case. Contact
Kevin Pugh, at (303) 665-5571 4130 for more information and to apply.

Interns:
We are currently accepting applications for non-paid Internships.  We have both under-graduate and graduate level openings.  Interns will be assigned to the Investigations and Patrol Divisions.  The assignments are flexible to accomodate student scheduling and credit requirements.  Prospective interns will work a minimum of 4 hours per week and be available Monday through Friday during the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
The primary duties while working with the Investigations Division include minor investigative follow up by telephone, assisting with case investigations and interviews, evidence processing, case filing and working with victims and witnesses on cases.
Primary duties while working with the Patrol Division will be to observe the line level job duties of the Police Officers on a limited basis.  Students must complete an application to be considered for the position.  Additionally, students applying for an internship must have a background check as well as an oral board interview. Explorer Cadets:
Anyone who is age 14 - 21 may become a Cadet.  The Lafayette Police Cadets participate in many activities with the Police Department. Cadets may ride along with police officers; gain insightful knowledge about what it’s like to be a law enforcement officer, see situations faced by officers, and learn about the day-to-day operations of the Lafayette Police Department.
The Cadets attend weekly meetings which include training and fun and challenging activities. Cadets will have the opportunity to attend a Cadets Academy taught by law enforcement personnel, the Cadets Academy is similar to a Police Academy.
Cadets also serve the community by participating in various City activities. Cadets can travel to an annual conference at which they compete in numerous activities and scenarios related to law enforcement. Social activities and fun are stressed as a large part of the conference experience.
You may or may not be interested in pursuing a law enforcement career, but becoming a Cadet provides a great opportunity to assist in serving your community while discovering more about the noble and challenging profession of Police Officer. Contact Officer David Self at 303-665-5588 x3182 or
email.
