Lafayette participates in the management of just less than 1,300 acres of open space. Open space is acquired and maintained thanks to two separate open space taxes.  The POST tax was approved in 1991 for 0.25% and the Legacy tax was renewed in 2003 for 0.25% to run from 2005-2014.

Why is open space land important?

  • To preserve or restore natural areas, including the plants and animals that live there;
  • To protect water resources and wildlife habitats;
  • To provide a place for light recreational use such as walking, photography, or nature studies;
  • To retain land for agricultural use;
  • To shape the development of the City and limit urban noise and congestion; and,
  • To safeguard the land for its contribution to your quality of life and the value of your home.
