Landscapers and Homeowners - Guidelines for Pollution Prevention
General Landscaping
- Keep sediment, fertilizer, grass clippings, and leaves out of the storm drain system. Use a broom or leaf blower instead of a hose to manage dirt and debris. Blown and swept materials must be collected and either disposed of or directed back onto the property being worked on.
- Contain and clean up liquid spills (e.g., oil, gasoline, fertilizers and pesticides) using absorbent material. Do not use a hose. Dispose of all clean-up materials properly.
- If the forecast is rain, do not apply fertilizer or pesticides unless the manufacturer's instructions say to do so. After fertilizer or pesticide application, adjust sprinklers to prevent runoff of fertilizer or pesticides into the storm drain system.
- If you must clean or rinse equipment, do so on landscaped or dirt areas where runoff will not occur. We prefer that you dispose of all waste water from cleaning activities into the sanitary sewer system.
Landscape Contracting
- Protect storm drain inlets from runoff from the job site.
- Mud and dirt tracked from the work area onto the street, sidewalk, and gutters should be swept up and returned to the job site.
- Stabilize areas of disturbed soil or stockpiled materials.
- Topsoil, compost, sand or bark should not be stockpiled in the street or gutter. Instead, stockpile these items on the worksite or in the driveway.
- Do not allow hoses to run or leak. When hoses are not in use, turn them off or use a closeable nozzle.
- Muddy water from trenches or other site-dewatering should not be discharged to the storm drain system.
A Special Note Concerning Open Space and Parks
- Do not dispose of any landscaping materials or any other debris in open space, parks or along trails.
- Do not wash or rinse equipment on open space or parks property.
- Do not drive vehicles onto open space or parks property or use such publicproperty to make deliveries.
