Writing Buddies

Here are some of the award-winning Big Buddies.
Volunteers with Writing Buddies, 2011

We offer a Writing Buddies program in the summer to reach rising 4th, 5th, and 6th graders (those who are too old to be traditional Little Buddies but too young to be Big Buddies).

The Big Buddies (high school and college students with previous Big Buddy experience) will lead the group through a series of creative writing activities, including brainstorming, prewriting, and editing for their major project.  The Little Buddies will select the genre(s) they are most interested in focusing on (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, etc.) and  eeach Big Buddy will work with the same small group of students each week.  (In other words, the Buddies will not be paired one-on-one, because much of our time will be spent writing.)

Little Buddies are strongly encouraged to continue at home what they started writing in class.  Big Buddies are expected to spend time preparing their presentations and activities.

On the last day of the program, the Writing Buddies will make a presentation to their families as well as receive a booklet of some of the group's writings.

Students participating in Writing Buddies must arrive on time, be able to attend most or all of the meetings, and notify the coordinator in advance if they will be absent.

The Writing Buddies must also be genuinely interested in, curious about, or and/or open to the idea of doing creative writing over the summer.  Please don't force your child to take this writing class if he or she is a reluctant writer!

To apply to be a Writing Buddy in Summer 2012  (Little Buddies in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade), pick up an application (in English or in Spanish) at the library; these will be available in by May 8, 2012 and are due by May 25 (first-come, first-serve, with priority given to students who live in Lafayette or attend Lafayette schools).

To apply to be a Big Buddy with Writing Buddies (9th graders or older, previous Big Buddies only, please), complete the traditional Big Buddy application online or at the library.
