Hydrant Flushing Program

Hydrant Flushing Program
Twice a year City of Lafayette Public Works Utility Crew operates the hydrant flushing program.   Residents may see the Utility crew working on the fire hydrants allowing water to run into the street.  It may appear we are ignoring our own water conservation philosophy. However, the process of periodically “flushing” fire hydrants is an important preventative maintenance activity to insure the integrity of the water system and deliver the highest quality water to our customers.

Hydrant flushing serves the following purposes:
  • Flushes sediments from mainline pipes, which enhances water quality.
  • Reduces bacteriological growth, restores disinfection residuals and improve color and turbidity
  • Verifies the proper operation of fire hydrants and valves.
  • Aids in determining weaknesses in the water system.
  • Helps to identify closed valves and weak flows in the water main.
  • Verifies ample water flow for fire fighting.
FAQ:
Q: Why is my water pressure low?
A: Your water pressure may be low due to the flushing of fire hydrants, which lowers the water pressure in the area that is being tested. This issue will be rectified once flushing is completed.

Q: Why is my water discolored?
A: Water discoloration or turbid water is caused by the stirring of sedimentation in the water main when hydrants are flushed.

Q: What should I do about the discolored water?
A: Run all faucets within your home for approximately 5 minutes or until water clears.

Q: Who should I contact if water does not clear after recommended precautions or for more information?
A: Call Mike Lucas, Utilities Supervisor at 303-665-6411.

Q: Is flushing a waste of water?
A: No! The amount and cost of water used in flushing is a small price to pay compared to benefits of assuring the quality of your water and maintaining our infrastructure.

Q: How will I be affected?
A: You probably will not even be aware that flushing is taking place in your neighborhood. Flushing is generally conducted between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Select hydrants will be opened for water pipe flushing. While the hydrants are open, the customers on that block may experience discolored water or a small drop in water pressure however; your water service should not be interrupted.
