Public Records
The City Clerk’s Office maintains administrative, operational, financial, legal and historical records for the City of Lafayette dating from the late 1800s. Lafayette Police and Municipal Court records are maintained in their respective departments.
The City of Lafayette has adopted the Colorado State Archives Records Retention Schedule which establishes the length of time various records are retained. Examples of records that are in the Clerk’s custodial care include:

ordinances, resolutions, minutes

intergovernmental agreements, water records, general ledgers,

contracts, development agreements, election materials,

property agreements and licenses.
Citizens may request to view or receive copies of records by returning a Public Records Request Form to the City Clerk’s Office. In accordance with the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA)
24-72-203, the City has three business days from the time a request is received to make the record available to the requestor. Sometimes an extension is necessary if the requested information will take longer to retrieve.
There is a $.25 per page charge for copying records and a retrieval fee may apply if the request is for a large number of documents that are not readily accessible. It is our goal to provide prompt access to public records unless such records are protected from disclosure by law.
