Water Treatment

Water Makes Life Possible

Without it, we can't survive for more than a few days. It is much more than a commodity. It is the stuff of life. Consider what our tap water does for us:

  • Public Health: In a world where an estimated 3 million people die every year from preventable waterborne disease, we can drink from our taps with a high assurance of safety. Our standards are high and the water is rigorously tested.
  • Fire Protection: Our water system is critical in protecting us from the threat of fire. A system that provides reliable water can be the difference between a small fire and an urban inferno. The ability to suppress fires also affects new home construction, business location decisions, and insurance rates.
  • Community Development: Businesses and housing developments cannot succeed without a safe and sustainable water supply. Tap water is critical to the day-to-day operation of businesses and is often a primary ingredient in the products they produce. The incredible value of water is magnified during times of drought.
  • Quality of Life: Low mortality rates, economic diversity, productivity, and public safety are all in some way related to access to safe water.

We take this all for granted, but when water service is interrupted, we're all reminded of the extraordinary value of water resources and services. The City of Lafayette's Water Treatment Plant provides drinking water to approximately 7,700 accounts in the City as well as 370 homes outside the city limits. The Plant has a production capacity of 13.0 MGD (million gallons per day).

Plant operators are licensed after rigorous testing by the State of Colorado and are highly knowledgeable in the water treatment process. They are committed to delivering water that meets or exceeds all state and federal drinking water standards and requirements.

The Water Quality Lab at the Treatment Plant runs approximately 18,000 tests per year from over 3,000 samples and looks for more than 300 possible contaminants. The results of these tests are reported annually in the Water Quality Report, available below.
