Recycling and Waste Diversion Centers - New!
If you're looking for places to recycle, check out this list of area recycling and waste diversion centers.
Compostable Plastics - New!
Compostable plastics are intended to be composted in a commercial composter. They do not break down quickly in landfills and cannot be recycled. The temperatures in backyard composters are rarely high enough to break the containers down.
The City of Lafayette does not offer curbside pickup of compostable materials at this time, but that doesn’t mean commercial composting is not available to us. Western Disposal Services, 5880 Butte Mill Road in Boulder, accepts food scraps, compostable flatware, cups and PLA compostable containers free of charge. We encourage Lafayette residents to take advantage of this service. Summer hours are Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The facility is open to the public.
Household Hazardous Waste
The City of Lafayette has joined with other area cities to paticipate in the Boulder County Household Hazardous Waste Program. We encourage you to take advantage of this program.
Medication Disposal
Unused medications present a special disposal problem. They also present challenging water treatment problems. Please do not flush unused medication. Be on the alert for area disposal opportunities.
Kaiser members can return unused medications to Kaiser pharmacies.
Plastic Bag Recycling - New!
Be on the look-out for bag recycling containers at local stores. #2 and #4 bags, otherwise known as plastic film, can also be taken to the Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM) facility at 5030 Pearl in Boulder. Please note that CHaRM now charges a $3 fee for every vehicle coming to CHaRM, so make your trips count! (For more information visit http://www.ecocycle.org/ or call 303-444-6634.)
Other bags that can be recycled include newspaper bags (unless there is excessive paint), drycleaning bags, and produce bags. Bags must be clean and dry, and receipts must be removed.
In 2007, over 830 million pounds of bags were recycled in the U.S. According to the EPA, that is only 12% of plastic bags used, but as awareness of recycling opportunities grows, that number will likely increase. Recycled bags are often recycled into new plastic bags or used in the construction industry.
