Information Regarding Coal Creek/Rock Creek Regional Trail:

Regional trail information
on BoulderCounty.org - find helpful flood damage details and information as it pertains to county trails

March 20, 2014

Many portions of Coal Creek Trail in Lafayette are currently closed and yet many portions damaged by the September flood have been repaired and are open for use - see the chart below for details on what segments are open.

For your safety, the safety of others, and to help speed the repair process, please stay out of the trail corridor where indicated by signage until otherwise notified.

The repair process takes time for planning, engineering, environmental assessment and finally construction. These efforts are continuing and we can expect to see construction activity begin very soon.

Rock Creek Trail in Lafayette is open thanks to incredible efforts by volunteers at
Open Space Day 2013.

Staff is working on soft-surface trail repairs to segments of Coal Creek Trail in Lafayette where minor trail damage occured. Where there is more extensive damage the process is ongoing to repair the trail.

Unfortunately, many sections of the trail have been heavily impacted by the re-formed creek channel and will require significant engineering work and construction. Also, pedestrian bridges and underpass damage at Public Road and 120th Street will take time and resources to repair. Temporary re-routes where the underpasses are located will eventually exist until underpasses are repaired sometime in early to mid-2014. The idea of an overpass crosswalk at 120th and S. Public Road is taking shape - this will allow users of the trail to safely cross these street interchages until the underpasse can be fully restored.

The reality of the major restoration work on this trail promises to be a lengthy endeavor. We are working with FEMA to assist with the funding of many repairs. The Open Space Division and our regional trail partners appreciate the public's patience during this long-term process.
