Register to volunteer for 2010 Open Space Day!
Lafayette owns just under 1265 acres of open space. Open space provides wildlife habitat, protects riparian areas and view corridors, provides buffers between other communities, and connects trail systems. Open space is acquired and maintained thanks to two separate open space taxes. The POST tax was approved in 1991 for 0.25% and the Legacy tax was renewed in 2003 for 0.25% to run from 2005-2014.
Do you have an interest in open space? Would you like to be on an email distribution list for information on naturalist programs, volunteer events, trail walks/rides, upcoming public meetings and other issues? If yes, become a member of the Lafayette Friends of Open Space!
Why is open space land important?
- To preserve or restore natural areas, including the plants and animals that live there;
- To protect water resources and wildlife habitats;
- To provide a place for light recreational use such as walking, photography, or nature studies;
- To retain land for agricultural use;
- To shape the development of the City and limit urban noise and congestion; and,
- To safeguard the land for its contribution to your quality of life and the value of your home.
