Wetlands
Wetlands protect against flooding and improve water quality while providing habitat for wildlife. The native vegetation in wetlands guards against pollution and traps sediment. Because of the intrinsic value of wetland areas to our environment, the EPA ruled that there should be "no net loss of wetlands." In other words, any destroyed wetlands must be replaced.
Lafayette has no natural wetlands, but there are several dry detention ponds with wetland-like vegetation
