Portable Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguisher
Here are some handy tips when buying and using a fire extinguisher.
1. When used properly, fire extinguishers can save lives and property by extinguishing or containing small fires until the fire department arrives on scene.
- The extinguisher must be within reach and in operating condition. You must have an escape route that is not blocked by fire.
- Use the right extinguisher for the right fire. Do not use a water extinguisher on a grease or electrical fire.
- The extinguisher must be the right size to handle the fire. Do not try to fight a large fire with a portable fire extinguisher.

2. Choosing your extinguisher.
- Select only an extinguisher that has been tested by an independent laboratory and labeled for the type and size of fire to be extinguished.

3. Classes of fires.
- Class A – Fires that have wood, cloth and paper burning.
- Class B – Fires that have flammable liquids burning (gasoline, oil)
- Class C – Fires that are electrically energized (circuit breakers, appliances)
There are multi-purpose fire extinguishers that are labeled ABC that can be used on all the type of fires listed above.

4. Extinguisher sizes
Located on the label of portable fire extinguishers are ratings for the size of fire it can put out. For example, 2A: 10BC. The larger the number, the larger the fire the extinguisher can put out. Keep in mind that higher rated models can be heavier. Make sure you can hold the extinguisher before you purchase it.

5. Installation and Maintenance
Fire extinguishers should be installed in plain view and out of reach of children and away from stoves and heating appliances. Follow your operator’s manual on how to inspect and maintain your extinguisher. Rechargeable models must be serviced after every use. (Look under “Fire Extinguishers” in the Yellow Pages).

6. Remember PASS
Pull the pin that unlocks the operating lever.
Aim low by pointing the nozzle at the bottom of the fire.
Squeeze the lever above the handle discharging the extinguishing agent.
Sweep from side to side carefully moving toward the fire. Keep sweeping at the base of the fire until the fire appears to be out. If it reignites, repeat the process.
Make sure the fire department inspects the fire site, even if you think it is out.

7. Should you fight the fire??
Fight the fire only if:
1. Everyone is evacuated from the building and the fire department has been called.
2. The fire is confined and not spreading.
3. You have an escape route that is not blocked by fire.
4. The extinguisher is the right type for the fire.
5. You know how to use the extinguisher.

It can be dangerous fighting a fire. If you can not put it out, leave immediately and close off the area.
