Operations Division

Commander Gene McCauseyThe Operations Division is supervised by Commander Scott Emerson, who has been with the department since 1989. Commander Emerson has served in several positions and collateral duties with the department, including: patrol officer, field training officer, detective, narcotics detective, internal affairs investigator, patrol sergeant, SWAT, bicycle patrol supervisor and detective sergeant. He was promoted to commander in November 2015.

Commander Emerson obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Criminology and is a graduate of the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command. He has also attended several other law enforcement leadership and management courses.

The Operations Division is divided into two sections which contain several collateral duties:

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the eyes and ears of the department throughout the city and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls. The women and men of the Patrol Division strive for excellence in a positive and professional manner, with dedication to community oriented problem solving. The Patrol Division is made up of 6 sergeants, 6 corporals, 17 patrol officers, 2 traffic officers, and 1 animal control officer. Patrol officers hold many additional specialty duties to include:

  • K9 Officer
  • Field Training Officers
  • Drug Recognition Experts
  • School Resource Officer & School Liaison Officers
  • Certified V.I.N Inspectors

Investigation Division

Detectives assigned to the Investigations Division are responsible for ongoing investigations that require substantial follow-up and specialized training. The division handles all types of cases from thefts to homicides and participates in the Boulder County Investigation Team. The Investigation Division is responsible for registering and verifying registered sex offenders within the city. This division consists of 1 sergeant, 5 in-house detectives and 1 detective assigned to the Boulder County Drug Task Force.
