In November 2018, the City of Lafayette Public Works Department was awarded the prestigious American Public Works Association (APWA) Accreditation designation. The APWA Accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the requirements of the management practices established nationally in the public works industry, as contained in the APWA Public Works Management Practices Manual. The City of Lafayette initially applied for Accreditation in September 2018. APWA Region IX Director Dan Hartman presented the department with their award at the February 19 City Council meeting.
The Accreditation of the City’s Public Works Department indicates the department met all applicable Accreditation documentation and practices over time. In a statement from Director Doug Short, “This process provided a new opportunity for staff from different divisions in Public Works to work together to define our policies and procedures. It was exciting for me to see the comradery and teamwork throughout the process. This was a valuable experience that energized staff to strive to achieve Accreditation.”
The City of Lafayette Public Works Department becomes the 148th agency in North America to be awarded Accreditation, and only the 9th agency in the State of Colorado. In addition to the City of Lafayette, the accredited agencies in Colorado include Arvada, Golden, Centennial, Aurora, Greeley, Cherry Hills Village, Castle Rock, and Arapahoe County. For the City of Lafayette review, a team of public works professionals from Palo Alto, California; Kitsap County, Washington; Chandler, Arizona; and Kansas City, Missouri, completed a thorough evaluation of operations during their October 2018 site visit.
