When the Lafayette Library is closed for a holiday, we lock up the outside book drops. But why?
Have you ever stood outside the Library entrance to watch the seemingly endless parade of cars creep by our external book drops? Keeping our collection moving is a constant process for our staff! Maybe sometimes you’ve come by during a holiday and noticed that the book drops are locked. We figure that when the city observes a holiday, we’d like all of our staff to be able to take a vacation; this includes the folks who empty those book drops. For this reason, the book drops are locked on days when the Library is closed. If they were left open, the returned items would quickly overflow onto the parking lot!
We recognize that this might be inconvenient for some, and this is why we set our systems so that nothing will be due and no fines will accrue until the day after we reopen. Even when we do reopen, our staff will backdate the earliest check-ins to the day before we closed. Hope this information is helpful to you; if you have questions or comments about any of our policies, always feel free to call 303-665-5200, contact us online or stop by.
