[ARCHIVED] Lafayette Police Department Press Release - February 18, 2020

On February 18, 2020 at approximately 4:10 a.m., the Lafayette Police Department was dispatched to the 600 block of South Lafayette Drive, Lafayette, Colorado, on the report of suspects breaking into vehicles in the apartment complex parking lot.  A witness who saw this activity occurring began to follow the suspects in his vehicle. It was later determined the suspects fired shots at the witness vehicle as they were fleeing.  Lafayette patrol officers were in the area of US Hwy 287 as the witness flagged them down and informed officers that the suspect vehicle was driving southbound on US Hwy 287.  Lafayette police officers caught up to the suspect vehicle at which time the suspects in the car fired shots at the patrol cars.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, later identified as Jacob Lopez (22), pulled the vehicle over north of Dillon Road on U.S. Hwy 287.  Three of the four occupants immediately got out of the vehicle and ran west into a large open field.  One female passenger remained in the vehicle when the suspect vehicle pulled over and was taken into custody.  Jacob Lopez was located in the field and arrested.

A large perimeter was established in the area of U.S. Hwy 287 and Dillon Road to search for the other two suspects.  This caused the closure of US Hwy 287 between Dillon Road and Miramonte Blvd in Broomfield.

During the search for the suspects, leads were obtained and it was determined the two suspects at large were juveniles who resided in the city of Arvada.  The Arvada Police Department was requested to respond to a residence located in the area of 58th and Ward Road, while the Lafayette Police Department obtained a search warrant and arrest warrants for the suspects.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. the Arvada Police Department successfully apprehended the two juvenile suspects without incident.

The suspects involved are identified and charged as follows:

Jacob Lopez (DOB/111797):   1st Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, 1st Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, 1st Degree Criminal Trespass, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Mischief $3,000-$5,000, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, Red Light Violations
