Never Take Your Public Library and Librarians For Granted

In Memory of Karen Andrews

This month we remember a great friend and dedicated  librarian, Karen Andrews. Karen passed from breast cancer on June 29, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She worked at the Library for 10 years, and leaves a legacy of dedication and creativity as a library innovator, a devoted manager and an architect of many programs, including LafayetteREADS! and the Death Café. Karen's moving artwork, The Arena Series, is on display in the Upper North Gallery through the end of August. We miss Karen, who was our co-worker and friend, and we remember all she brought to our community.

July Art Night Out Wast Diversion of 92% !
Calypso by Annette Coleman

Art on the Street

The 2019 Art on the Street sculptures line Public Road in Old Town Lafayette. Take a stroll or view the website to enjoy the sculptures.
River's View
Artist: Annette Coleman
Lakewood, CO
Location: E. Chester St. & S. Public Rd - NE corner
Medium: stained glass, Thinset concrete, grout, steel base
Price: $12,000

Artist Statement: This sculpture is based on mythology and the memory of a carnival ride for inspiration. Calypso was a nymph in Greek mythology, who lived on the island of Ogygia, where, according to the Odyssey, she detained Odysseus for seven years. As you look deep into the patterns of colorful glass you too will lose yourself just as Odysseus, or twirled around on the Calypso carnival ride.

I love the bright colors of stained glass and the way you can cut curves and circles and play with shapes. I use recycled metal and cement for the substrate to insure long lasting, weather tolerant sculptures.

For more information about this or any other Art on the Street Sculpture, visit the website or contact arts@cityoflafayette.com
