    Lafayette City Council created the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in 2016. The HRC is committed to evaluating Lafayette City government, programs and processes with an inclusive lens, with a goal of fostering equity, social justice and freedom from fear of persecution based on race, religious belief, country of origin, sexual or gender identity, physical ability or age.
    The group meets monthly in order to: Make recommendations to City Council on ways to improve inclusivity and diversity in the City of Lafayette; facilitate community conversations on issues and/or occurrences of division and conflict in the City of Lafayette, and to make recommendations for ways to resolve and eliminate these; research, study and make recommendations to City Council and staff regarding federal, state or local government actions that may have an effect on diversity and inclusiveness in the City of Lafayette.

  1. Flight at Night Lantern Walk

    A magical and unique event for the whole family. Celebrate the Fall Equinox and the coming of darkness with a Lantern Walk around Waneka Lake along with an exciting schedule of other night time activities. People of all ages can enjoy storytelling, stargazing, learning about nighttime bird migration and much more. The featured activity will be a walk around the lake with homemade lanterns made from local, recyclable materials including willow canes from Lafayette Open Space properties. Two lantern-making workshops – one for families at the Lafayette Rec Center, and one for adults at The Collective - will be held in advance of the September 22 event. This event is suitable for all ages and will also feature an array of fine door prizes. The event is co-sponsored by Lafayette Open Space and the Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission.   2. 5th Annual "Celebrating Bird Migration"

    Explore the wonderful world of birds in a beautiful place! See live birds of prey up close and view birds in the wild through spotting scopes and binoculars. Learn about migration, marshes and the role avian friends play in our lives. Enjoy art projects and a scavenger hunt. These and other activities will be featured at the 5th annual “Celebrating Bird Migration” at Lafayette’s Waneka Lake and Greenlee Wildlife Preserve Open Space. The 1/3 mile walking path between the parking area on the east side of Waneka Lake and Greenlee Wildlife Preserve will feature several local organizations with great activities and displays to offer. This free public event is suitable for all ages and will also feature an array of fine door prizes.

The farming inspiration for the park stems from Lafayette's agricultural history and the Nuoci family farm's heritage with raising chickens; at one point one of the largest poultry operations in the region. The City of Lafayette's Parks Department is looking forward to unveiling this beautiful 3.2 acre park to the public. Suitable for all ages; families are encouraged to attend - light refreshments and snacks will served.

  1. 2018 Citizens' Police Academy - FULL

    The Citizens' Police Academy is a unique 12 week mini-police academy for citizens 15 and older. The academy meets once a week to explain and demonstrate many of the department's policies, divisions and functions. Some areas covered include DUI investigation, crime scene investigation, felony car stops, traffic enforcement, tactics, SWAT and officer safety. If you have ever wondered why the police do what they do to keep you safe, apply to attend the 2018 academy! Applicants and background checks are required. Applications available online & at the police department. We are accepting applications until August 20. Seating is limited, so apply early! FALL CLASS is now FULL! Typically we hold one academy per year, in the fall. We are considering adding a spring academy in 2019 (dates to be determined). If you are interested in attending our Citizens' Police Academy, please contact us to get on the spring list or watch for more information on next year's fall class!

    Sign up for an orientation where you will learn how to use the Nautilus Machines, free weights, and cardiovascular equipment along with proper weight room etiquette. For the price of admission, trained staff will provide a personalized weight raining orientation to anyone 12 years old or older! 12+ Year olds will receive a Parent/Youth Weight Room ID allowing the youth to work out with a parent any time except our peak times, Monday- Thursday, 5-7:30 PM. 15-17 year olds will receive a Weight Room ID upon completion of the orientation, which can be used at any time.
